Types of Yari

A “Yari” is a Japanese spear that is characterized by its dual, sometimes three-sided, blade as well as its’ typical bamboo or oak handle. Yari are thought to have gotten their inspiration from the Chinese routed “Hoko”, which though may be true, they are different in structure. The blade of a Yari is intricately placed inside the shaft of the weapon, making it different. Adding to this, the Japanese actually started to use these out of necessity not desire. Yari were not only effective because of their versatility but they were also cheap to create, which was important with the rapidly growing numbers of Samurai.

Yari are differentiated by the length of their blade & handle as well as the shape of the tip of the blade. The different styles are also typically associated with the different purpose or intentions behind them. As well as differing objectives, the different material and details also displayed the status of the Samurai holding it. Samurai typically used this weapon fighting on foot and they were primarily used as a thrusting or slashing weapon.
