Gallery Overview

China has had a tumultuous history of struggling to solidify its position as a world power in the eyes of the West. However, over the course of history they have gone from being exploited by western powers to dominating the global economy and having one of the loudest voices on international issues.

The economic journey that China has gone on through its modern history has mimicked that of its role in the fashion industry. At the beginning of the 19th century, China was seen as a place to get inexpensive fabric, and was mocked in european fashions. However, following the second world war, the world began to see China as a global power. As such, China began to take charge of the economy with its growing influence on the textile industry. The country soon transitioned from merely the role of producer to now being one of the dominant perpetrators of conspicuous consumption. Furthermore, the nation is beginning to be recognized for its emerging designers who are making a name for themselves in the fashion worldand may soon be as famous as brands such as Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton.
