In Quito there are strict social distancing regulations. People are not allowed to gather in large groups and must always wear masks in public places. There have been several regulations placed in Ecuador since the COVID-19 outbreak began. One of them was that people could only leave their house to get food or medicine. Also, some vehicles could only go out on a specific day dictated by the last number in their license plate. This caused a very sharp decline in the number of cars that were out in the streets. Many people would go to buy food in bicycles since they could not take the car out. The number of people in the streets is very low as it can be seen in the image.

People in Quito are allowed to leave their house only to go buy food or medicine. My grandma has several visits to the doctor due to her eyesight. In order to avoid risks she wears a suit, gloves and mask in order to avoid contamination. When going to a hospital it is always scary because many people containing the virus could be there so she must take extra care since she is high risk.

The question that I get asked the most often by my friends is how does dinning work now on campus. I always explain that the kiosk in CPH has a kitchen and everyday it is open from 8am to 8pm for the students to use. There are several regulations. For example, you need to be wearing a mast whenever you go to buy food and must keep a six-foot distance between yourself and the other students. We get to use meal swipes and our declining balance. There is a daily special menu and every once in a while, there is some special event like taco Thursday or ice cream sandwiches. What is particularly hard is that the suppliers of the dinning staff have gone out of business so some items have been hard to get such as milk. It is always a struggle to keep a balanced and healthy diet when the options are limited. The picture shows eggs and toast.

One of the things that makes Union so special are the numerous activities that students get to participate on. This year we had a speaker coming to union for a talk about surviving the holocaust. Naturally, we had to make it through zoom. The speaker was Edith Eva Eger and I was very excited. About 800 people signed up for the meeting. However, no one was very used to using zoom and it was not as engaging as it would have been if we had actually been able to see Edith Eva Eger in person on campus. It was still a very interesting experience and I believe that we all learned from it.
Adapting to the online environment has been a challenge for students and professors alike. In the beginning we all had to get used and familiar with zoom. This could be particularly challenging because there where days when the internet did not work in CPH and at least two times the power went out. I did miss a few classes due to connectivity issues but most of the time the professors where quite understanding.
My 300 German class requires students to do many presentations for the entire class. This was definitely a new challenge since we had to present through zoom while the professor showed the slides. It did not always work and it was very complicated but we still had to do it. There were several 10-minute presentations which were entirely in German and that made presenting very hard. Many students presented live but others like me preferred to record the presentation and then show the recording to the class. I had to learn to record my computer screen and at the same time record me presenting.

In the beginning we all had to get used and familiar with zoom and this was very hard because most of us did not know each other so it was definitely a challenge. Everything had to be moved online not just class but office hours and meetings too.

During the term the UNITAS club got together and made bags with essentials for each student staying on campus. They delivered the bags in CPH and the RAs where in charge of distributing them. In the bad there where snacks, cleaning supply and a seed with a flower pot and soil. I had no idea what kind of seed it was but decided to plant it nonetheless. It brought me something to do every morning and I really enjoyed watering it and watching it grow over time. I am still not so sure what it is but it still keeps growing. The plant has proved to be more than just an addition to my room. It is weird when you live alone like me and human contact is so minimal that even a plan can make a big difference.

I am an RA in CPH for this spring term and one of the things that I decided to do was to create a CPH Instagram page. I followed most of the residents of CPH and share news and stories. I post the daily menu every morning so that students can see what will be served in the downstairs kiosk. We also like to get recommendations as to ways to improve the residents’ experience in CPH. I like posting the weekly events that the RAs are planning and we even posted the LEGOs that the students made. This Instagram page is a way to connect students and let them know what is happening on campus on a daily basis.
