Immediately after returning home from Union, I briefly grieved the loss of my on and off campus jobs and returned to the job search, applying to 13 jobs in one day. Luckily, I had a leg up at BJs because my mom also works there as an essential employee. My third shift was a 12 hour day, so straight away I could recognize the dire need for grocery store employees. Many of my coworkers were taking time off for fear of contracting the virus while others actually did get the virus and had to face the financial, social, and health implications. I answer at least 15 calls about toilet paper and lysol wipes daily. Though we can all look at the mass hoarding of these items as crazy and selfish, I have seen folks who are simply terrified of what might happen to them or their families if they were to contract COVID-19.
The craziest experience so far has been the number of people who go out of their way to thank me for the work I am doing, while I took the job for entirely self serving purposes. Though I am part of an at-risk group, I am not experiencing the fear that I had anticipated a month ago.
