History
Union College’s Stone Lion is a cultural artifact unearthed in China in the 1860s and gifted to the College shortly thereafter. Little is known about who commissioned the work or where it was originally displayed, but an examination of its cultural significance, both in China and on campus, helps us understand its importance. In this essay, Professor Sheri Lullo discusses the history of stone lions in China, the Stone Lion's history at Union College, and conservation efforts.
