How Philly Became an Oil Hotspot in the Mid/Late 1800s
-
Description
-
Philly became one of the main places for storing and refining oil in the late 19th century. Once Edwin Drake struck oil in western Pennsylvania in 1859, the industry blew up fast and companies needed somewhere bigger to refine and ship everything. Philly was the perfect spot for that because it already had a major port and many railroad connections, and open space along the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. By the 1860s and 1870s, the city had multiple oil storage sites and refineries spread around. After multiple fires and accidents, companies moved their operations farther south, which is how spots Point Breeze and Girard Point became long term refinery hubs. All of this early infrastructure ended up shaping how South Philly looks today and also played a huge role in how the city grew around the oil industry.
