-
Description
-
With the construction of the Erie Canal in 1817 came along a wave of early immigrants into Utica, notably Irish immigrants. The production of railroads also led to large immigration into Utica, as Utica was quickly becoming one of the centers for textiles. The industrial development of Utica coincided with the arrival of many new immigrants, including a significant Italian population along with Poles, Greeks, Jews and others from southern and eastern Europe, Syrian-Lebanese, and a host of others, intertwining culture and economic growth.
