Title
-
The Stonington Fishing Fleet
-
Description
-
Prior to the introduction of steam trawling in 1906, groundfish off the New England coast were caught exclusively with baited lines, fished from schooners and their smaller dories. Even in a smaller port town like Stonington, the local fishing fleet was the lifeblood of the community. This era of fishing was the last remnant of a pre-industrial society, where mass commodification of natural resources and surpluses in food were things of imagination for most Americans.
