Ohio's Cuyahoga River
-
Description
-
Cleveland was one of the most important cities during the Industrial Revolution. John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in Cleveland, Ohio. Standard Oil operated the biggest oil refineries in Cleveland and would dump its runoff byproduct into the Cuyahoga River, which flowed into Lake Erie. The city of Cleveland would dump its sewage, detergents, and chemicals into the river. The Cuyahoga River was so heavily polluted that it turned a nasty brown color and had suds of soap nested on top of it.
