Description
-
Pelican Island was established through an executive order signed by President Theodore Roosevelt. It's managed by the Audubon Society (est. 1886), and provides habitat for dozens of endangered and native species. It represents one of the first instances of wildlife conservation being implemented at the federal level, demonstrating a significant shift from the treatment of species like the passenger pigeon and buffalo.
